Much of the music written for this recording was inspired by the following: the people, nature, and music of Brazil, playing with other saxophonists, and the music of Julius Hemphill, Hermeto Pascoal, and the other jazz heroes cited below. The Brazilian name of a South American ground bird, Macuco is also the name of a street in São Paulo with family significance. "Macucos" has a few samples of the bird’s whistling call, both actual and imagined. "Itajuba" is a small beach town in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. This one features Rick. "Friendly Signs" was written in 1996 during a brief period of tendonitis (resulting in a unison line that didn’t require playing piano to compose) and after a long period of listening to Steve Lacy, plus the memory of playing Haitian compas. Allan & Joel duet, then Rick solos. "Modernismo" is named for an architectural style, and musically its block shapes alternate with more romantic lines. "More Serious" has an Afro-Cuban groove and "Os Gêmeos" (“The Twins”, for the visual artists that go by that name) is based on the Brazilian maracatu rhythm. "Postcard to Carla" is a tribute to (and imitation of) the music of jazz composer Carla Bley. This one features Allan. "Sun & Clouds" was written in the city, dreaming of the country. "Leaping Over a Black Pool", written in 1996, was inspired by Sun Ra’s early recordings. "Johannzinho" imagines composer Gustav Mahler living in Brazil. "Touchic’" was written by saxophonist/composer Julius Hemphill and recorded by the World Saxophone Quartet in 1981. Viva a música!

I’d like to acknowledge my gratitude to the musicians for their creativity, my co-producer for his great ideas, the engineers for their expertise, my family & friends for their support & wisdom, and to everyone else who has helped this project along.
